CrowdStrike’s CEO has hoisted AI by its own petard, using Claude itself to bat off concerns a new security capability built into the chatbot could “kill” cyber.
CrowdStrike was among a number of cyber tech stocks to tumble on Friday and Monday following the release of Anthropic’s Claude Code Security.
It works by scanning codebases for security vulnerabilities and suggests targeted software patches for human review, “allowing teams to find and fix security issues that traditional methods often miss”.
Although Anthropic stressed Claude Code Security is available in a limited research preview only, its launch sent cyber stocks tumbling.
CrowdStrike’s share price fell by over 17% on Friday and Monday combined, with Zscaler and Okta’s down by around 15% and Fortinet around 7%.
This comes on top of wider concerns about how AI might impact the SaaS market.
“So there you have it”
CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz was quick to invoke the power of AI itself as he attempted to head off the concerns, however.
“There’s been a lot of noise lately about Claude replacing security products. I figured, why not go straight to the source and ask Claude directly?,” he explained in a LinkedIn post.
He asked the AI chatbot to build him a tool to “replace” CrowdStrike.
“I appreciate the ambition, George, but I have to be straightforward: building a replacement for CrowdStrike isn’t something I can do here, and it wouldn’t be responsible for me to suggest otherwise,” the reply came back.
“So there you have it – straight from Claude,” Kurtz wrote.
“AI is powerful. It’s transformative. And it absolutely makes security better. But AI doesn’t eliminate the need for security. It increases it.
“If you want to build AI, you need GPUs. If you want to deploy AI, you need security. That’s not a hallucination – it’s a fact.”
