Crayon and Anglepoint

Gartner SAM Magic Quadrant 2023

Status: ‘Leader’ (both Crayon itself and – separately – its Anglepoint subsidiary)

Any change from 2022? Yes. Whichever way you cut it, Norway-based software reseller Crayon was the big winner in this year’s quadrant. Crayon moved up from the ‘Visionaries’ to the ‘Leaders’ quadrant. Anglepoint, meanwhile, remained as the Leader whose dot was furthest right and furthest up.

Summary

Gartner billed Anglepoint (which Crayon acquired in 2015 but is still independently run), as a “good fit for organisations with large and complex estates wishing to outsource SAM entirely, on a continuous basis”. Almost 40% of Anglepoint’s consultants are now based in Europe thanks to its November 2022 acquisition of UK-based FisherITS, Gartner noted, with almost half stationed in North America.

Crayon, meanwhile was branded a “good fit for small and midsize clients looking for international coverage and with complex cloud and SaaS spend”.

Strengths

Anglepoint was praised for its breadth and depth of services (it has SAM expertise in over 500 publishers) and for having the highest proportions of clients receiving its entire portfolio of services. Its management is heavily involved in the SAM ISO Standards Working Group 21, FinOps Foundations, and other bodies of SAM and ITAM, Gartner also noted.

Crayon, meanwhile, won plaudits for expanding its expertise in cloud cost management, its breadth of services and its international presence (it has resources in 17 locations).

Cautions

Gartner raised a question mark over Anglepoint’s strategy of not engaging with clients without first carrying out a SAM maturity assessment. Its negligible presence in APAC and LATAM, and the limited availability of its staff, were also seen as weak spots.

Crayon was marked down for having “below-average” market share of large, complex projects and the lowest average SAM managed services contract value of the 12 companies (80% below $100,000 a year). It also showed “inconsistent” vendor expertise, Gartner concluded.

What they said

Melissa Mulholland, Crayon

“It is an honour to be positioned in the Leaders Quadrant. We believe this incredible acknowledgment demonstrates our team’s deep knowledge and expertise in providing Software Asset Management services. We’ve gained this expertise through our customer-first focus for more than 20 years which has shaped our industry-leading practice to help all companies, regardless of size, industry, or complexity,” – Crayon CEO Melissa Mulholland
