4. “We’re the number-one distributor in the world, so it’s a good call out to everyone that we’ve moved so muscularly in this way.”
Who said it? Dave Watts, VP UK&I, TD Synnex
Watts was speaking after TD Synnex gained approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its decarbonisation targets in May.
Under its near-term targets, TD Synnex has committed to reducing its absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 (from a 2022 base year). Regarding Scope 3, by 2028, the distributor has committed that 90% of its suppliers by spend and 58% of its customers by revenue will have science-based targets in place.
Under its long-term targets, it has committed to slashing its Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 90% by 2045 (from a 2022 base year), meanwhile.
Why was it significant?
Distributors will play a pivotal role in the wider industry’s efforts to cut carbon emissions, Watts claimed.
“A lot of vendors – certainly a lot of our customers – need a lot of support getting their heads around what they can do themselves, and what we can do together. So for us to be leading the charge in those conversations is really important,” he explained.
What happened next?
Despite TD Synnex’s progess, the IT sector has endured a mixed year when it comes to sustainability. Hyperscaler emissions continue to surge, with the SBTi itself plunged into an identity crisis in the summer.
