Jigsaw24 has won the pilot for the hardware component of a ground-breaking “digital jury bundle” initiative that could be rolled nationwide.

The value of the contract, which could see Jigsaw24 supply up to 30,000 iPads to over 80 courtrooms by 2029, has a stated range of £1.16m to £79.1m.

Currently, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) prepares paper jury bundles for around 30,000 Crown Court trials annually at more than 80 sites in England and Wales.

It now wants to arm jurors with jury bundles via a digital solution. These will contain exhibits that the prosecution and defence counsels refer to during the trial.

Jigsaw24 has won the hardware component of the pilot phase, which will encompass up to 1,000 devices and cover up to three sites.

For the national rollout, the CPS is seeking to procure between 20,000 and 30,000 tablet-style devices on a lease basis.

The contract will also cover charging cabinets, device peripherals and a managed service for configuration, troubleshooting/issues service desk, break-fix, device replacement, OS updates and ‘boost’ device provision.

Nottingham-based Apple partner Jigsaw24 saw revenues rise 31% to £241m in its latest annual period ending 31 May 2024. It ranked 16th in the most-recent Oxygen 250.

In a statement to IT Channel Oxygen, Paul Gopinathan, Head of Public Sector at Jigsaw24, said:

“Working with the CPS to move jury bundles from paper to digital has been an exciting project for our team. Deploying iPad and secure management tools in courtrooms shows how small technical shifts can reduce clutter and speed up proceedings, and its testament to the vision of the project.

“We focused on reliability, security and ease of use, which is our approach to any project. It’s currently being piloted in a number of courtrooms ahead of being rolled out further, but it just goes to show how thoughtful technology adoption can drive meaningful change in even the most complex and high-stakes environments.”
