A customer mismatch lay at the heart of Cybit’s decision to divest its enterprise-grade security division, its Executive Chairman has told IT Channel Oxygen.

Newcastle-based MSP Cybit has sold Cybit Cyber, formerly Cyphra, just four years after acquiring it as part of an early-decade M&A spree.

Belfast-based Cybit Cyber’s new owner is Dublin-headquartered digital services provider Viatel Technology Group.

The move comes after former Softcat and Ultima executive James Hunnybourne took the reins of Chiltern Capital-backed Cybit in March.

“The solutions provided by the Belfast Team of Cybit Cyber were of the very best enterprise grade and addressed large businesses that were heavily regulated,” Hunnybourne told IT Channel Oxygen.

“While Belfast and the team will be sorely missed their solution stack did not always match the requirements of Cybit’s wider midmarket and SME customer set, so a secondary Cyber unit was needed to address this.

“Under Viatel they will be able to do what they do best. This will also allow Cybit to push forward with the solutions and partnerships suited to the security market of our target customer set.”

Backed by Chiltern Capital since 2019, Cybit withdrew from a planned sale process last year following a change in market conditions.

Ranking 150th in Oxygen 250 2025, the Microsoft, Qlik, Palo Alto Networks, F5 Networks, Check Point and AWS partner bills itself as a “provider of data intelligence and AI-driven technology solutions”.

Cybit claims its sweet spot lies in providing data intelligence & AI, modern workspace, managed services and security to the mid-market corporate and SME segment. It recently unveiled former Ultima exec Marc Pawson as its Sales Director.

In a statement, Paul Rellis, CEO of Viatel Technology Group, said: “We are delighted to welcome Cybit Cyber into the Viatel family. Its deep expertise in enterprise-grade cybersecurity perfectly complements our existing capabilities and strengthens our position as a trusted digital transformation partner. This acquisition reinforces our commitment to delivering secure, scalable, and innovative solutions to businesses across Ireland and beyond.”
