7 killer quotes that rocked IT distribution in 2024

2. “AWS Marketplace is one of the biggest distributors in EMEA and globally”

Alastair Edwards, Canalys Forum 2024
Canalys Chief Analyst Alastair Edwards branded AWS a “distributor” at recent Canalys Channel Forum EMEA event

Who said it? Canalys Chief Analyst Alastair Edwards

Edwards had a newsflash for the distributors who attended Canalys’ EMEA Channels Forum in October when he characterised the world’s biggest hyperscaler marketplace as one of them.

Why is it significant?

Considering that some $16bn of third-party software spend travelled via hyperscaler marketplaces (led by AWS) in 2023, arguably the analyst has a point.

Although Canalys has made similar statements in the past, Edwards’ proclamation will have only cemented fears that hyperscaler marketplaces are encroaching onto distribution turf.

“They are acting as a distributor,” Edwards said of AWS on stage at the event.

What happened next?

More a case of what will happen now: Canalys claims sales of third party software via hyperscaler marketplaces will reach $85bn by 2028.
