The decarbonisation dash among distributors hit another milestone today as Westcon-Comstor announced its UK business is now being powered purely by renewables.

The $3.4bn-revenue distributor seemingly got the jump on its global rivals in October when it had its decarbonisation targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.

Now, it has announced that its three UK sites in Bracknell, Cirencester and Swindon have completed their move to 100% renewable electricity.

This follows on from a similar announcement by rival TD Synnex business in November.

Networking, security and UC&C specialist Westcon is aiming to move to 100% renewable electricity globally by 2030, with the UK becoming the first country to achieve the feat.

At the same time, the distie is working to cut its energy consumption across its UK facilities, including via a recent LED lighting upgrade at its Swindon logistics facility.

Its Cirencester and Bracknell sites both now have EV charging points for employees, meanwhile.

“Having set ourselves ambitious sustainability targets as a business, it’s rewarding to be able to demonstrate that we are making tangible progress in an important market like the UK,” Mark McLardie, Head of ESG at Westcon-Comstor stated.

“Purchased electricity currently accounts for nearly 70% of our Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions globally, and moving to renewable sources will accelerate our progress towards a 50% reduction in these emissions by 2030. We also recognise that reducing energy consumption has a vital role to play in ensuring our business is operating sustainably, and this is a real focus for us in the UK and globally.”
