At Canalys in 2022 you characterised consumption models, or as-a-service, as being “not very good for corporate customers”. Has your opinion changed?

Nothing has changed there, other than that I feel like I have a lot more friends that agree with me.

They’re not bad, in that they give you a good quality of service, they keep you current, they keep you upgraded and up to date. It’s not that they’re rubbish or s**t, as I said, they’re just expensive. As-a-service software is more expensive than what I call BAD – buy and depreciate – software. Buy and depreciate in the long run is cheaper than as-a service.

What do you make of the situation at VMWare?

I read an article in CRN US where they interviewed Jim Kavanaugh of WWT, and I found myself agreeing with almost everything he said, on different things, and he was concerned about the VMware situation. I’m not the right person to ask. I don’t get as close to the vendors as some people – you’re not going to hear the best quote for me.

“I want a meaningful target,” – see Norris’ views on sustainability on final page…
