Two young IT channel pros lighting up the industry with their achievements have acknowledged they weren’t aware of its existence before they joined it.

Telefonica Tech UK’s Tiffany Nelson and Distology’s Daniel Evans opened up on their career paths and highs and lows of their roles during an Oxygen Influencers podcast (see full episode, bottom, and highlights, above).

Nelson is the reigning HPE Channel Reality Show winner, while Evans is the youngest committee member of free mentoring network The Channel Community.

They were among the 50 individuals nominated by peers and selected for our Oxygen Influencers project, which was created in association with Nebula Global Services.

In episode 1 of the podcast, Nelson revealed she’d studied Computer Science but hadn’t considered a career in IT sales until a chance conversation with a friend’s Mum.

She worked in marketing before applying for her current role.

“Honestly, I didn’t know IT sales was a thing before hearing about it from her,” she said.

“[Applying for Telefonica Tech] was one of the best decisions of my entire life. Every single day is different, which is what I love about it.”

Similarly, Evans only moved into the cyber sales space following a false start training to be an accountant.

“I had no idea the industry existed,” he said.

“You always have a target, and it always goes back to zero after the end of the year – so that’s something to keep on top of.

“But the highs definitely outweigh the lows. The partnerships you create, the people you get to meet, the communities you can get involved in, are all incredible.”

In episode 2 of the podcast, Nelson and Evans share their advice on how the industry can attract and retain more fresh talent.
