6. Pax8’s New York Times tomfoolery

Pax8 Beyond
Pax8 Beyond

We already knew Pax8 didn’t like being called a ‘distributor’, but we didn’t suspect quite how much until it took out a full-page New York Times ad in March.

Pax8’s unusual mainstream media broadside goading “legacy” rivals TD Synnex and Ingram Micro produced one of our most-read stories of the year.

The article – which spoke to the core of distributor’s shifting role in the channel ecosystem – led to its rivals blasting back at the so-called ‘cloud commerce marketplace’ and a follow-up IT Channel Oxygen interview with Pax8 CEO Scott Chasin.

The ‘d’ word makes Pax8’s blood boil so much, it only agreed to help us with our ‘Top Distributors’ report this year if we added ‘and Marketplaces’ to the headline. Like the peacemakers we are, we duly obliged.

So is Pax8 a distributor or not?

We tackled this question in the only way we knew how – by putting it out to our readers in a deeply unscientific LinkedIn poll (see the outcome here).
